Spring Into Life

woman with long dark hair

At last, it’s time to think about dusting off the flip-flops and wondering if we can justify one or two spring wardrobe additions (that linen skirt was always a bit see-through anyway/those “white” t-shirts are really only OK for sleeping in now, etc. etc.). Meanwhile, the beauty counters are beckoning, promising to turn post-winter parched and pasty limbs sunkissed and supple and to coax neglected toes out of boots and opaque tights into gorgeous new nail colours (but not before feet have been given a quick once-over with a pumice, and a good lick of foot cream. Done daily, amazing transformations can be made in next to no time).

Taking it from the top, book in for trim to get rid of style-dulling split ends and sharpen up your look. Now is also a great time to think about reviewing your current style – ask your hairdresser for any suggestions that might make it as low-maintenance as possible, allowing you to wash-and-go more often during the warmer months ahead. We love Moroccanoil Treatment (£30.45 from selected salons) as it's a condition, style and finishing product - all in one.

It’s amazing how luminously pasty legs can look after a winter in hibernation. There’s no need to go for the full self-tanning monty just yet – a savvier, inbetween-seasons strategy is to use a wash-off bronzing spray, gel or cream, only where you need it. Just the job when you suddenly warm enough to go bare-legged, but your pins are glow-in-the-dark pale. We’ve just rediscovered Guerlain’s much-loved Terracotta Teint Doré (£24) – loved by beauty insiders, it’s been around since the Second World War – which is streak-proof, and comes off with soap and water. Other tried-and-trusted temporary bronzers include Maybelline New York's Dream Glow Sun Glow Instant Bronzing Make-up (£5.99) in Matte or Shimmer and Rimmel London’s Sunshimmer Tan Make-Up (£5.99).

Warm-up your skin and feel sunshine-y, instantly, with a swirl of bronzing powder. Don’t stop at your cheeks – use a big, fat bronzing brush – Bobbi Brown’s award-winning, pro-style Bronzer Brush (£36.50) is pricey but works brilliantly – to extend colour from cheeks to your temples, forehead, a little on your nose, chin and neck and blend, blend, blend. Great bronzing powders include Bobbi Brown’s classic Bronzing Powder (£23.50), Bourjois’ Delice de Poudre Bronzing Powder (£6.99) and Max Factor’s Bronzing Powder (£5.99).

Add a further ‘pop’ of spring colour with a tinted lip shine. We love Ruby & Millie’s beach cocktail-bright Lip Gloss (£11.50) in Sunset and Natio’s new Ultra Shiny Fruit Gloss (£8) in shades such as Melon, Coconut and Passionfruit (at Debenhams nationwide). Yum.

Nothing says ‘here comes the sun’ like a holiday-perfect nail polish. Among our favourites are Marks & Spencer’s new Essential Nail Colour (£2.50) in the gorgeous new, ice cream shades including Mint and Pastel (pink); Collection 2000’s new, busy mama-friendly Hot Looks Fast Dry Nail Polish (£1.79) in Spangles (lime) and Hula Hoop (pink) and the new Avon Speed Dry Nail Enamel (£6) in Rose Amour and pedicure-perfect Ballerina.
