Time to Shine - Winter Beauty Tips

Where did November go? It seems like only last week we were doing sparklers and toasted marshmallows. Suddenly, we’re into Advent, the Christmas countdown is truly underway and the party season is in full swing ...

For flat-out mamas, an excuse to forget about the festive ‘to do’’s for a few hours, scrub up and get spangly is wonderful. That said, after a looong day, just the thought of embarking on a fiddly, time-consuming mission to glam-up is enough to make you cancel, pleading exhaustion/a double booking/a sudden dose of Lapland flu.

Don’t panic: MumKnowsBest has picked six, standout beauty buys that will take you from feeling ‘frankly pooped’ to ‘ready to party’, in a matter of moments (truly) and minimal fuss.

Pro make-up artists always rave about primers - they help to illuminate tired, end-of-the-day skin and provide a glowing base for make-up - but they can be pricey. With Christmas budget-watching in mind, Superdrug’s Natural High Radiance Balm (£4.49) works a treat. Apply it before your usual foundation.

Another snip, spotlight cheekbones, just under the brows, the collarbone - anywhere you want to add a touch of festive gleam - with Barbara Daly make-up’s Glow-Up (£6.95, at Tesco stores). Apply after foundation, or - if you haven’t had time to take your make-up off and start from scratch - just apply and glow ...

Create fast, easy after-dark eyes with a soft eyeshadow that’s a cinch to blend. New for December, Bourjois’ Little Round Pots Eyeshadows (£5.99 each) come in a choice of vivid, glittery and ‘sculpting’ shades to help you achieve different looks. There are three black shades: 04 (with a hint of purple), 07 (emerald) and 06 (pure and pearly black), or go for 13 (plum with silver sparkle) or 92 (steel grey with sparkle) - take your pick! Blend with an eyeshadow brush along the upper and lower lashline.

Follow smoky eyes (or simply accent bare eyes) with a coat or two of Rimmel London’s new Max Bold Curves (£6.49, available now). The curvy brush is designed to build lashes that are “BIG, fat, boldly lifted ... and free of clumps, of course”. Non-clumpy volume - we like the sound of that.

So far, our beauty choices this month all have an eye on the budget. Then we go and throw in a Chanel lip gloss. Part of the new Les Tentations de Chanel Christmas Collection, the new Lèvres Scintillantes in Charming (£19) - a pale, glossy pink - is the perfect match for a smoky-eyed or neutral and glowing look.

Last, not least, fragrance. We’re loving Estée Lauder’s new Sensuous Noir (from £32), a warm, spicy-floral mix inspired by the original Sensuous perfume. Perfect for getting you in the party mood, we can’t get enough of it ...
