Warning: Parents are being asked NOT to use safety bumpers in their babies' beds because they increase the risk of cot death
Parents are being urged not to use safety bumpers in their babies’ beds because they increase the risk of cot death.
New advice from doctors warns that babies can suffocate against, be strangled or trapped by the popular padding, which wraps around the inside of a cot and ties to slats.
The warning has been officially adopted for the first time by the American Academy of Paediatrics as one of the key steps for preventing cot death. Others include putting your baby to sleep on their back, not sleeping with your child and not smoking in the same room as him or her.
A spokesman for the UK cot death charity, the Foundation for the Study of Infant Deaths, said its advice is that baby bumpers are not necessary.
